Meet The Team

Tom Stevens, LPC-S, RPT-S

I am a psychotherapist who specializes in working with children and their families, and I have a private practice in Houston, Texas.  With over 25 years experience, my main goal is to help people get where they want to go by building a safe and supportive atmosphere for treatment.

I am a native Texan and have lived in Houston for most of my life.  I have been married to my wife, Jill, for 20 years and we currently live in Northwest Houston with our two children.  I have served on the board of the Sam Houston Association for Play Therapy (SHAPT). This is the local chapter of the Texas Association for Play Therapy (TAPT), which focuses on play therapy as the most effective way to treat children’s emotional issues.

Whether it is a one time consultation to get help with some current life issues, education on a particular parenting issue or even ongoing counseling for something that doesn’t seem to be getting any better, I am here to help you get where you want to go.  Contact me today for a consultation!

Melissa Borchgrevink, MA, LPC

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor. I was born and raised in Cypress, Texas and received my B.S. in Psychology from Texas A&M University in 2016. I graduated with honors from Texas State University with a Master of Arts degree in Professional Counseling in May, 2019. During my program, I was trained in play therapy along with counseling teens and adults. I was also a student intern at the Children’s Bereavement Center in San Antonio where I co-led groups and saw children and teens individually. I believe that a caring and trusting therapeutic relationship can create change. I have a passion for working with children and teens by showing them how to trust the world around them through a safe and supportive environment. I look forward to working with you!

My Mission: To help people of all ages realize a happy, hopeful, and fulfilled life. I want children to experience a therapeutic relationship that brings them joy and self confidence. Likewise, I am driven to work with adults who have been through anxiety, depression or broken relationships, so they can experience freedom and joy from all of their past pain. My passion is to give every person I see the chance to look at life in a new and hopeful way. I love every opportunity I get to treat children, teenagers, and adults, because my work with them can help their future relationships, career, and confidence. Creating an atmosphere of safety, comfort, and trust is one of my main goals with each client I see. Listening, understanding, and compassion are my strengths, along with helping each client walk a new path in life, free from the burdens and struggles in the past. I believe in creating a treatment plan that each client understands trusts, allowing us to know what progress and completion of treatment looks like. I am here for you, and ready to walk alongside you on this journey. I can't wait to get started!

My Experience: I recently graduated with a Masters degree in Counseling from the University of Houston. I have completed a full practicum experience at Renewing Hope in Houston, Texas specializing in working with children, while also working with clients of all ages. I have six years of teaching experience. Most recently, I have taught first grade, but I have also worked with other grade levels in K-12. I also work for Writers in the Schools (WITS), where I have creative writing summer camps for students in grades 2-6. I am a member of the Texas Association for Play Therapy and am seeking certification as a Registered Play Therapist (RPT) after completing my graduate degree.

About Me: I am very excited to be a part of the team at Tom Stevens Counseling. Having an atmosphere that is family oriented, focused on a passion for growth and healing, and helping clients feel welcome and taken care of, are the main reasons I know this is the right place for me. I am a curious, creative introvert who likes to laugh. I love reading, hiking, cats, chocolate, and KPOP. Tangled is one of my favorite movies. I like to go on walks in the park with my mom, cook and play board games with my friends, and travel to new places. I love learning languages and about other cultures. I can't wait to meet you and start working together on a better tomorrow!
